If you’ve ever stepped out of the shower without your hair feeling truly clean, you may want to investigate the world of water softeners. Cleansing showers are very important if you’re trying to get clean or cool off after a particularly hot day in Hesperia, but hard water might make that feel impossible.
What can a water softener do for you that makes such a difference? Thompson Family Plumbing and Drain, an expert in plumbing solutions from Hesperia to beyond in California, explains more below.
What Is Hard Water?
Hard water is groundwater that carries lots of minerals. As this hard water enters your property’s pipes, you’ll find problems emerging, whether in Hesperia or beyond. These problematic minerals might include calcium or metals.
If you try to wash your hair with hard water, you may notice how it clumps up when dry or feels dirty, even after a good shampoo. You may also find hard water bringing some challenges when you wash your dishes as if you’re trying to clean them off and are still noticing something like soap scum. If you clean your property’s floors or windows with water that’s hard, you may notice a residue after you sanitize.
Luckily, there’s an easy solution for hard water problems: a water softener. Your hard water from an urban water supply isn’t a problem with one of these softeners installed. If you’d like the water you can use confidently for cleaning, washing machines, sinks, and showers, it’s an easy fix.
What Is a Water Softener?
A water softener is a tank installation treatment system. This setup removes all the minerals that make your water hard using a mineral tank and a brine tank to filter the water. A softener removes the minerals with a process called ion exchange.
Hard water may be safe to drink, though it doesn’t always taste good. However, it is not exactly fun shaking out stiff clothes after a wash. Sodium chloride pellets or potassium chloride can help you counter this hard water problem, with or without a water softener.
How Do Water Softeners Work In Practice?
Your new water softener will draw water into the mineral tank, where it uses sodium chloride pellets to conduct ion exchange. Once the hard water “softens” in this tank, it moves through your property’s pipes and will no longer cause soap scum woes or straw-like hair.
After water softeners work for a while, the brine tank helps restore the sodium system by regenerating the beads’ ion exchange abilities. The control valve can sense the softening capacity within the tank. When it does, it activates the mineral tank to reset the water softening, which starts again.

“Price was more than reasonable, especially last minute”
What a great local family company. Had a little issue today (Saturday). Gave them a call. The lady said she would have someone here between 3 & 5. It was at 1 when I called. 3:00 on the nose Don was here. Don was very friendly and had the broken pipe fixed in no time at all. The price was more than reasonable, especially last minute on a Saturday.

“Took care of it in no time”
Plumbing technician Dean Taylor came over last week to set up a line so I could get a dishwasher installed. I didn’t have the proper setup but he took care of it in no time! Now the installers will have no problem doing it. He was very knowledgeable and professional. I will definitely have him come back for other plumbing jobs. From start to finish everyone I spoke to was very helpful! Their customer service is outstanding!

“Gave me great peace of mind”
Great experience with TFP! They were super professional and friendly, exactly on time, fixed the issue, AND were inexpensive. I received a text when to expect them with a picture of my two technicians (Dean & Kade) AND their license numbers included in the text. This gave me great peace of mind as I am a woman that lives alone. I highly recommend Thompson Family Plumbing!
