How To Optimize Water Pressure Throughout Your Home
Thompson Family Plumbing is your go-to choice for residential plumbing repair and installation throughout Lake Havasu City, AZ and Hesperia, CA.
When you turn on your sink to wash dishes, are you greeted by a sad trickle of water instead of a steady stream? Or maybe the water blasts out with an alarming ferocity. Either way, something is amiss with your home’s water pressure.
In this guide, discover how to optimize water pressure, and in turn, preserve the life of your plumbing system.
Why Is High and Low Water Pressure a Problem?
High water pressure may seem like a good thing to have, but your plumbing system begs to differ. If water pressure is overly high, it can eventually cause your pipes to crack and crumble. Should that happen, you’ll be on the hook for the cost of a brand-new system.
Low water pressure is equally as bad. Here are just a few of the plumbing woes you might experience if your pressure isn’t up to par:
- If your water’s flow rate isn’t strong enough to push debris through the system, you could end up with nasty clogs in your pipes.
- Your system might use more energy to pump water, causing your utility bills to increase in turn.
- Your washing machine and dishwasher will struggle to work at full capacity. If your clothes and dishes are dirty after washing, that points to a water pressure problem.
How To Do a Water Pressure Test
Before implementing corrective measures to optimize water pressure, you’ll need to get an accurate reading of your home’s water pressure. For that, you’ll need a simple gadget called a pressure gauge. Once you have one, here’s how to perform a pressure test:
- Turn off all water-using appliances, such as your dishwasher and washing machine.
- Find an outdoor hose bib or faucet, the closer to the main plumbing line of your house, the better.
- Connect the pressure gauge to the faucet or bib, then turn the water on. The gauge will tell you the water’s pounds per square inch (psi). Ideally, you want the psi to be between 30 and 80.
Correcting Poor Water Pressure
If your water pressure isn’t where you’d like it to be, here’s what to do:
- Check for clogs in the pipes, which can cause a serious drop in water pressure. Removing clogs can cause an instant water pressure increase.
- Clean the aerators at the end of each faucet. Aerators can become clogged with mineral deposits over time.
- Flush the sediment from your water heater if you haven’t done so recently.
- Adjust your system’s pressure-releasing valve (PVR) if it has one. To increase pressure, turn the valve clockwise. To lower it, turn counterclockwise.
- Install a water pressure regulator and booster pump if DIY methods don’t do the job. A pressure regulator might be required if you live far from the municipal water supply.

“Price was more than reasonable, especially last minute”
What a great local family company. Had a little issue today (Saturday). Gave them a call. The lady said she would have someone here between 3 & 5. It was at 1 when I called. 3:00 on the nose Don was here. Don was very friendly and had the broken pipe fixed in no time at all. The price was more than reasonable, especially last minute on a Saturday.

Plumbing technician Dean Taylor came over last week to set up a line so I could get a dishwasher installed. I didn’t have the proper setup but he took care of it in no time! Now the installers will have no problem doing it. He was very knowledgeable and professional. I will definitely have him come back for other plumbing jobs. From start to finish everyone I spoke to was very helpful! Their customer service is outstanding!

“Gave me great peace of mind”
Great experience with TFP! They were super professional and friendly, exactly on time, fixed the issue, AND were inexpensive. I received a text when to expect them with a picture of my two technicians (Dean & Kade) AND their license numbers included in the text. This gave me great peace of mind as I am a woman that lives alone. I highly recommend Thompson Family Plumbing!
