Signs of Water Main Issues: How to Identify Problems in Your Hesperia Property
Thompson Family Plumbing is your go-to choice for residential plumbing repair and installation throughout Lake Havasu City, AZ and Hesperia, CA.
The majority of homes in Hesperia were built before 1999, meaning that many have plumbing problems due to old piping. Water main issues are a serious concern that can cause major property damage and incur significant repair costs, making water main replacement a necessity.
It’s important for homeowners to recognize the signs of water main issues so they can schedule prompt repairs. With that in mind, the team at Thompson Family Plumbing & Drain is here with this quick guide on water main troubleshooting.
What Is a Water Main?
Your water main is the main pipe that takes water from a municipal district or private well and pumps it into your home. Water mains and water lines connect to everything in your house that uses water, so problems with your water main can affect any water-using device in your home.
Generally, the water main is located right behind and below your kitchen sink, most often in a basement or buried underground. Your home also has a water main shutoff valve which lets you shut off all water coming into your house.
Signs of Water Main Issues
If you notice any of the following signs, you may have a water main issue that needs addressing.
Low Water Pressure
At some point, you’ll notice low water pressure on one or a few of your faucets. If all of your faucets have low pressure, then the culprit is likely your water main. The problem could be a clog or a leak in the main pipe.
Discolored Water
If your water main has a hole, dirt and sediment can infiltrate your water supply, causing your water to become discolored. Dirty water is cloudy and may have a musty smell. Rust from the inside of your water main can also cause water to turn a reddish-brown color and have a metallic taste.
High Water Bills
If your water usage hasn’t changed but your water bill has suddenly spiked, it could be a leak in your water main. A water main leak can waste up to 90 gallons per day which will create a noticeable spike in your usage. You can perform a water main leak detection by using your home’s water meter. Record its value, then re-record it a few days later. If the difference is greater than your use, you likely have a water main leak.
Flooded Yard
If your water main is buried in your yard, a flooded yard is a sign of a leak. You may also notice patches of overly green or overgrown grass. Depending on the size of the leak, you might be able to hear a gurgling or hissing sound near the ground.

“Price was more than reasonable, especially last minute”
What a great local family company. Had a little issue today (Saturday). Gave them a call. The lady said she would have someone here between 3 & 5. It was at 1 when I called. 3:00 on the nose Don was here. Don was very friendly and had the broken pipe fixed in no time at all. The price was more than reasonable, especially last minute on a Saturday.

“Took care of it in no time”
Plumbing technician Dean Taylor came over last week to set up a line so I could get a dishwasher installed. I didn’t have the proper setup but he took care of it in no time! Now the installers will have no problem doing it. He was very knowledgeable and professional. I will definitely have him come back for other plumbing jobs. From start to finish everyone I spoke to was very helpful! Their customer service is outstanding!

“Gave me great peace of mind”
Great experience with TFP! They were super professional and friendly, exactly on time, fixed the issue, AND were inexpensive. I received a text when to expect them with a picture of my two technicians (Dean & Kade) AND their license numbers included in the text. This gave me great peace of mind as I am a woman that lives alone. I highly recommend Thompson Family Plumbing!
