The Importance of Backflow Prevention in Victorville, CA.
Thompson Family Plumbing is your go-to choice for residential plumbing repair and installation throughout Lake Havasu City, AZ and Hesperia, CA.
‘Backflow’ is a plumbing term that refers to when dirty sewage water infiltrates clean water lines. Backflow can happen due to sewer blockages or pressure changes in your sewage system. Backflow can cause dirty sewage water to seep up through your drains and toilets which poses a health and safety hazard to your family. The team at Thompson Family Plumbing & Drain is here to explain the importance of backflow prevention.
What Is a Backflow Prevention Device?
Backflow prevention devices fit on your sewer line and prevent backflow from occurring. In short, backflow preventers keep water flowing in one direction—out of your home—and stop water from flowing in the opposite direction, providing drinking water protection.
How Do Backflow Preventers Work?
Most backflow preventers use one of three mechanisms: check valves, vacuum breakers, or air gaps. The mechanics are different, but all preventers work by stopping dirty water from being pushed back into clean water lines.
Check Valves
Check valve preventers contain a small flap or ball that allows water to flow in one direction and stops it from flowing in the opposite direction. Changes in water pressure cause the check valve to close and seal the sewer line so water cannot get forced back into your main water supply lines.
Air Gaps
Air gaps are small vertical gaps that separate clean water supply lines from dirty drain lines. Air gaps are positioned in such a way that they allow clean water to drain into the drainage lines but won’t allow water to flow from drainage lines into clean lines.
Vacuum Breakers
Vacuum breakers contain a small disc on a spring that is pushed open when pressure is at the correct levels and water is flowing at the right levels. When water pressure changes and the flow reverses, the disc will push and shut off the pipe, preventing water from flowing in the unintended direction.
Do I Need a Backflow Prevention Device?
Most locations have laws that require homeowners to install backflow devices into their sewer system if they connect to a public water source. Backflow preventers prevent your sewage from contaminating public water. You may also be required to install a backflow preventer if your home is near a natural drainage area, such as at the bottom of a hill, or if your home has cross-connection control.
Even if you don’t need one for regulatory compliance, installing a backflow preventer is a smart idea from a plumbing safety perspective. Water contamination from a sewage backup can cause significant damage to your home and pose a major health hazard to you and your family.

“Price was more than reasonable, especially last minute”
What a great local family company. Had a little issue today (Saturday). Gave them a call. The lady said she would have someone here between 3 & 5. It was at 1 when I called. 3:00 on the nose Don was here. Don was very friendly and had the broken pipe fixed in no time at all. The price was more than reasonable, especially last minute on a Saturday.

“Took care of it in no time”
Plumbing technician Dean Taylor came over last week to set up a line so I could get a dishwasher installed. I didn’t have the proper setup but he took care of it in no time! Now the installers will have no problem doing it. He was very knowledgeable and professional. I will definitely have him come back for other plumbing jobs. From start to finish everyone I spoke to was very helpful! Their customer service is outstanding!

“Gave me great peace of mind”
Great experience with TFP! They were super professional and friendly, exactly on time, fixed the issue, AND were inexpensive. I received a text when to expect them with a picture of my two technicians (Dean & Kade) AND their license numbers included in the text. This gave me great peace of mind as I am a woman that lives alone. I highly recommend Thompson Family Plumbing!
